About Us
Stalbridge Timber Supplies as it is today has evolved through more than 70 years
experience in the timber industry. It began in 1926 with the setting up of a
sawmill business, on the present site, by the two
Turner brothers Richard and James.
The site was chosen for it's proximity to the Stalbridge railway station (now
closed) for ease of transportation. Timber was extracted from the woods by horse
drawn vehicles, then hauled into the sawmill by steam driven locomotives, a stark contrast to our present day fleet of modern goods
vehicles!
The business ran throughout the war contributing to the war effort not only
with timber supplies but, also by producing it's own electricity with generators
personally built by the two brothers.
After the death of the brothers, Richards' son John the current senior director,
carried on the business as a sawmill which was later converted into it's present
format as Timber Merchants and Importers together with Roof Truss Design and
Manufacture, being run by the third generation, Richard and Peter Turner.
Stalbridge Timber Supplies has therefore the advantage of many years
experience in all aspects of the timber industry, being able to serve a wide
spectrum of customers with quality timber at competitive prices covering a large
area of South-West England.
